  6. Q. Please introduce yourselves to our
  7. readers?

  9. I am Mano Scherpbier the producer of
  10. the C64 orchestra. The company where I
  11. work for: Productiehuis ON is NON-
  12. profit organisation. We are making
  13. crossover pop productions. Like
  14. breakdance ON classic (a breakdance
  15. show on classical music) or NO blues

  18. Q. Can you introduce the main names of
  19. everyone involved with the project ?
  20.  
  21. Julian van Aalderen is the vj of the
  22. C64 orchestra, but he also came up
  23. with the idea of the C64 orchestra. He
  24. is a good friend of Jeroen Tel and
  25. they were at Jeroens home. Jeroen was
  26. playing Cybernoid 2 at the piano.
  27. Julian asked Jeroen if it's was
  28. possible that a orchestra was playing
  29. Jeroen Tel's SID music. And of course
  30. it was possible, but they did not
  31. know how to organise...

  52. Q. From the original thought how did
  53. the project become a reality?
  54.  
  55. Julian has contacted productiehuis ON.
  56. Productiehuis ON was excited about the
  57. idea. We've contacted a couple of
  58. Dutch orchestra's. Some of them did
  59. not like the idea. The Ricciotti
  60. Ensemble was excited and so the C64
  61. orchestra was born. The first time we
  62. talked with Jeroen Tel and Julian
  63. about the C64 orchestra was MAY 2005.

  72. Jeroen Tel had asked Rob Hubbard to
  73. arrange the music of Jeroen for the C64
  74. orchestra. Rob Hubbard wanted to do
  75. this, but only when the C64 orchestra
  76. also play some music of the master
  77. himself. We we're excited to hear this!

  79. Q. Can you explain what the C64
  80. orchestra is?

  82. The C64 orchestra exist out of 12
  83. musicians of the Ricciotti Ensemble
  84. from Amsterdam. They are playing the
  85. old C64 game music of Jeroen Tel & Rob
  86. Hubbard. Julian van Aalderen aka the
  87. C-men has made visuals of the old
  88. computer games
  89.  
  90. Q. So you perform C64 game music on
  91. real instruments? What instruments are
  92. used?
  93.  
  94. We've chosen for a small orchestra
  95. because we want to play a lot and at
  96. small stages as well. That's why we've
  97. chosen for 12 musicians Flute, Oboe,
  98. Clarinet, Trumpet, Horn 1, Horn 2,
  99. Trombone, Violin 1, Violin 2, Alto
  100. Violin, Cello, Contrabass

  102. Q. How was the original Commodore SID
  103. tune converted to sheet music for the
  104. musicians?
  105.  
  106. Rob Hubbard did this. He's a arranger
  107. as well

  115. Q. How long do you dedicate to
  116. rehearsals?
  117.  
  118. 6 rehearsal before the first show. Now
  119. we rehearse at the same day of the
  120. show.

  122. Q. From obtaining a sheet music copy
  123. how long does it take to rehearse to a
  124. point where the music is presentable to
  125. the public?

  127. A couple of months

  129. Q. Are all the orchestra professional
  130. musicians?

  132. They are semi-professional.

  134. Q. How do you decide which SIDs to play
  135. in public?
  136.  
  137. Rob Hubbard and Jeroen Tel have chosen
  138. the tunes. They know the best which
  139. tunes sound also good when they are
  140. played by an orchestra

  142. Q. Where have you played the music?
  143.  
  144. At this moment only in the Netherlands.
  145. At popfestivals, in venue's and  art-
  146. festivals. Some other countries(Sweden,
  147. Denmark, Portugal,Germany) are
  148. interested. So call me when you want to
  149. book us.

  167. about the project?

  172. Q. I am guessing someone will have
  173. emailed and said the SID versions were
  174. better can you comment?

  176. Yes of course some people don't like
  177. what we did. But the most important
  178. thing is the composers of the original
  179. tunes where totally involved in this
  180. project and they like it! And there
  181. are a lot of fans. When you don't like
  182. it. No problem listen to the old tunes!
  183. We like it too!

  185. Q. What plans are the now for the
  186. orchestra, where will you be playing?
  187.  
  188. I hope we are playing this year 10
  189. shows in Europe! I'm busy to book some
  190. shows at the summer festivals Keep an

  193. Q. Will you attempt other game music
  194. lets say Amiga Mod files or music from
  195. other hardware?

  197. No we are only playing C64 music!

  199. Q. Do you intend to play music from New
  200. systems like the Xbox or Playstation?

  202. NO we are the C64 orchestra ;-)

  205. Ricciotti Ensemble
  206.  
  207. "The Ricciotti is Holland's most fun
  208. orchestra" was a recent comment in a
  209. national Dutch morning paper. The
  210. Ricciotti is fun because the young
  211. musicians enjoy their stand-up
  212. performances. Sometimes, orchestra
  213. members even dance to their own music!
  214. The Ricciotti is fun because it plays
  215. not only classical, but jazz and pop
  216. music, as well. The Ricciotti is fun
  217. because it's the world's only
  218. orchestra that will play absolutely
  219. anywhere and not just for seasoned
  220. concert goers. It will perform for
  221. twenty-seven prisoners in C Block, or
  222. for fifteen-hundred teenagers at a
  223. festival. Even so, being "fun" is not
  224. enough for the Ricciotti. The
  225. Ricciotti aims to bring high-quality
  226. music to people who, for whatever
  227. reason, have little or no contact with
  228. live symphonic music. The orchestra
  229. seeks out people where they work or
  230. live. It means you could run into a
  231. Ricciotti performance at school,
  232. inside a prison, inside a hospital or
  233. nursing home and, during the summer
  234. months, in any street or square. No
  235. matter how crazy the place, the
  236. Ricciotti will play there. Any
  237. Ricciotti performance is a thrill.
  238. What will happen? Nothing is
  239. predictable. Before each stand-up
  240. appearance, the ensemble will have
  241. made a choice from a lengthy list of
  242. highly varied repertoire, picked from
  243. four centuries of music. Mozart now,
  244. Michael Jackson next, no problem. Five
  245. minutes after socking it to you in
  246. "Rock Around the Clock", the soloist
  247. has combed the grease out of his hair
  248. to move into the delicate sensibilities
  249. of a Gustav Mahler Lied. Contrasts in
  250. any Ricciotti performance come hard &
  251. fast. The audience is never allowed to
  252. fall asleep. Moments after being lulled
  253. by a dreamy Gabriel Faur piece, the
  254. listener is apt to be shocked into
  255. awareness when a member of the
  256. orchestra loudly announces:
  257. "Now for a first performance: this
  258. piece is specially written for the
  259. Ricciotti!" The Ricciotti ensemble's
  260. offbeat nature is revealed by its
  261. curious habit of musically raiding
  262. unsuspecting locations: when a place
  263. looks suitable, orchestra members will
  264. dismount, form and tune up in minutes &
  265. start playing to a startled audience.
  266. Missed your train? By way of
  267. consolation, here suddenly is a thirty-
  268. nine-piece orchestra playing on the
  269. platform! Just arrived at the City Hall
  270. to register your newly-born? The
  271. Registry official may have trouble
  272. hearing what you say over the full
  273. sound of the orchestra bowing and
  274. blowing away in the lobby. Throughout
  275. its thirty-one years of existence, the
  276. Ricciotti has never quite behaved like
  277. regular orchestras. The Ricciotti
  278. believes, however, that fun isn't
  279. enough. This orchestra is a learning
  280. experience. Through its unconventional
  281. nature, the players, advanced amateurs
  282. and music-college students, develop a
  283. different way of approaching both
  284. music and audiences. Given the goal of
  285. reaching out to people who seldom set
  286. foot inside a concert hall, that
  287. different approach is essential.
  288. Audiences, for their part, are given a
  289. real chance to experience what an
  290. orchestra is all about. Where they
  291. might expect bow ties, tails and
  292. boredom, here they meet a group of
  293. youthful enthusiasts who transform
  294. orchestral playing into a genuine live
  295. happening. It's for this reason that
  296. the Ricciotti will insist on including
  297. regular concerts for children in its
  298. schedule. The Ricciotti's educational
  299. values work both ways: for orchestra
  300. and audience.

  302. Educational or not, the Ricciotti
  303. remains above all else Holland's most
  304. fun orchestra. Here is a group of
  305. young people whose joy in playing is
  306. totally infectious!
